Ray-Bryant House

401 W. Grand Street

Dr. Ray had settled in neighboring Kentucky Town
.  In 1878, the year Whitewright was founded, Dr. D.M. Ray moved to the new town and built the Victorian house.  The style was Greek Revival with fluted ionic columns, a central hall with the parlor on one side and the dining room and library on the opposite side.
Dr. Ray delivered the first baby born in Whitewright, Jesse Rathburn.  Dr. Ray's office was in his home.
Dr. Ray was also the first President of the First National Bank, occupying the position until 1908.

Gladys Ray, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Ray, was a local author and historian.  She wrote Legends of the Red River Valley and Murder At The Corners.  Murder At The Corners tells the story of one of Texas' famous feuds.  The Lee-Peacock feud took place in the Desert-Pilot grove area south of Whitewright.  Gladys and her sister, Inez Ray, lived in the house.  Ms. Ray died in 1968.  The house was purchased by James and Kay Bryant in 1969, who renovated it in 1988.
