Kimbell-Horton House 129 W. Maple St. The
house was built by Kay Kimbell, who was born in Oakwood, Texas, on June
15, 1886, son of Benjamin Bascom Kimbell and Mattie Jones Kimbell.
In 1877 B.B. Kimbell left Florida and walked into Texas where he
commenced to work for wages but soon owned a general store at Oakwood.
He was said to be one of the best traders in Texas. As a
young man he accumulated thousands of acres in East Texas. In
1899 he traded some of this land for the Beatrice Mill at Whitewright
in Grayson County. B.B. Kimbell, with his wife, son Kay, and
daughter Mattie, then moved to Whitewright. It was here that Kay
Kimbell learned skills in the milling business under the guidance of
his father. He began his career at the age of 13 by loading
and unloading cars as well as sacking corn meal and flour while
continue to attend the local school. He completed the elementary
schools and then attended Grayson College where he studied business for
two years. (Kimbell, Kay. Grayson County Frontier Village, The History
of Grayson County, Texas, vol. 2.) By October 1933 Mr. and Mrs. Kay Kimbell were living in Ft. Worth. (The Whitewright Sun, October 12, 1933, pg.5)
The house was also owned by C.B. Bryant, Jr. and Cloy Horton. After Cloy Horton's death, his wife, Versa Horton, continued to live in the house for many years. Whitewright History Susan Hawkins © 2024 If you find any of Grayson County TXGenWeb links inoperable, please send me a message. |
