Gillet-Smith House Built
by Dan GIllet in 1880s and known as the "Whitewright mansion", the house (4,500 sq. feet) served as a dormitory for girls at
Grayson College as it was located near Grayson College.
The house was later owned by Roscoe Gillet, owned by the Smith family in 1945. The house burned in 1985. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Wheelr, owners of the historic home, were in the process of restoring the old home when it burned. The Friday Literary Club and the Whitewright Public Library secured photographs of some of the historic homes in Whitewright in 1976. All that was left of the Gillet home was a photograph commissioned by The Friday Literary Club as a record of its existance. The old house was one of the finest examples of early American architect in the area. The house had been owned by Will Holland, Grover Gillet, Roscoe Gillet and Joe Richardson. (The Whitewright Sun, Thursday, May 19, 1986) The home was replaced by the Wheelers on the south side of Grand St. The new home had nine rooms and was 2,600 sq. feet. Jerry Knight began building the new Victorian home on March 7, 1885. Whitewright History Susan Hawkins © 2024 If you find any of Grayson County TXGenWeb links inoperable, please send me a message. |
