"Whitewright: A 'Booming' Small Town," By Joe Cole Denison Herald June 14, 1992 TEXOMA COMMUNITY ENJOYS A COMBINATION OF OLD, NEW Whitewright is one of those small towns in the Texoma area that has seen good times and bad - but during the current recession, Whitewright is doing better than some. With eyes on more tourist trade, Whitewright is experiencing something of a "boom", even if it may not be heard outside the city limits. Unlike a lot of small towns these days, almost every building along Whitewright's main street is occupied. Chamber of Commerce President Donald Caraway points out that there is a new bed and breakfast in town, as well as an artist. Caraway says the chamber has big plans for the $30,000 the town was in recent Keep Texas Beautiful contest, but the main goal of the town's people is to "have as much fun as possible without losing too much money." Caraway is always easy to find. Just about anyone can stand around on Whitewright's main street a few minutes and expect Caraway to walk up and start talking about his town. He tells of having maybe a dozen millionaires in Whitewright; but he says you would meet one and never know it. They're just like everyone else in town - just plain good folks he says. Whitewright is having a big arts and crafts trade show and tractor pull during the July Fourth Celebration, and the new sky-diving club at the Tri-County Airport is putting on a show during the Fourth as well. Caraway likes to introduce visitors to the business people of Whitewright, and to talk about the Whitewright Opry. He says sometimes the singing isn't too good, but it's an enjoyable thing to visit. He likes to tell about the weekly newspaper. which has doubled circulation since the paper was taken over by Whitewright natives Leon and Pokey Combs. Generally Whitewright is a nice place to visit if one likes the slow life with a twist. You could have a little fun there if you use a little timing.
