The Whitewright Sun
Friday, March 29, 1912 pg. 2 PORTER CHURCH We have been thinking seriously of going to Macon, Georgia, to the Confederate reunion, to be held May 7, 8 and 9. We are very anxious to go and don't see how we can resist the temptation. We would like to cross the Chesapeak Bay again and view point Lookout, but don't want to be guarded by the blue coats like we were when we crossed it before. From the description given by Mr. Wiley the most beautiful part of the city now, the most palatial residences, the most beautiful parks and public square that now add to the beauty of the city is the sunken gardens adjoining the Union station. They are remarkable as a demonstration of what can be down with apparently waste land that would otherwise be an eye sore to the community. This land when we were there was a sunken desert for miles and looked like it was totally unfit for any use. Although it has been 47 years ago the 26th of last month we still have a very vivid recollection of the scene. It was a beautiful bright, balmy morning and we were hastening on our way for exchange and release. Farming is at a stand still now on account of the ground being too wet to work. More water fell here on the 22nd and 23rd than has fallen in the same length of time in 3 years. It will be a great benefit to oats and wheat and start the grass in the pastures. The farmers had just got started to planting corn, but it will be several days now before they can resume planting. O.H. Clark, of Merkel, who came down to attend the Byars trial has been visiting his niece, Mrs. Mack Cooper and other relatives in this section for several days. The health of this community is good now as fas as we know except colds which are very common. Our school taught by Miss Mamie Pickes closed on the 19th with an entertainment in the evening which was a credit to teacher and pupils. Uncle Abner St. John of Pilot Grove was in attendance at the closing exercises. G.W. Ritchie attended the Fat Stock show at Ft. Worth. M.M. Cooper is attending court at Bonham. Tom Graves was on the jury at Bonham last week. Whitewright History Susan Hawkins © 2024 If you find any of Grayson County TXGenWeb links inoperable, please send me a message. |
