Worth Daily Gazette Sunday, April 1, 1888 pg.7 WHITEWRIGHT Bitten by a Copperhead - Passenger Train Wrecked Special to the Gazette Whitewright, Texas, March 31 - A young man by the name of Richard Buford, who was working for Mr. George Anderson, about one mile east of this place, was bitten by a copperhead snake yesterday evening while shucking corn in the crib. Mr. Buford says he felt a stinging sensation on his ankle and looking down saw the reptile coiled around his foot biting his ankle. Mr. Buford got the snake off with some little trouble, and mounting a horse, came to town as fast as possible. Whisky was use quite freely, and the doctors think there is no more danger. Mr. Buford killed the snake. The east-bound passenger train on the Cotton Belt Railroad was wrecked yesterday morning about half a mile east of this place. The trucks on the tender broke, which threw the whole engine off the track and jarred the engine up considerably. Trains were delayed about 5 hours. Officer Rome Roberts arrested today H.C.L. Dean, who has gone violently insane over religion. He went to the residence of a neighbor and tried to cut his throat. He also whipped out 14 men with a long pole. When arrested he had in his possession a large knife and a whetstone. Officer Roberts left tonight with his prisoner for the county jail at Sherman. SHERMAN Special to the Gazette Sherman, Tex., March 31 - The grand jury adjourned today to meet on the last Monday in April, having found 220 true bills including felonies and misdeamors. George Stubblefield, the architect who fell from the brick building yesterday, receiving serious injuries, will probably recover. Dean, who resides near Pilot Grove, and he was taken to Sherman last Saturday and incarcerated in the jail to prevent him from murdering someone. It is alleged that he went to the house of a neigbor and tried to cut his throat. Also that he stood off 14 men who tried to capture him.
