Whitesboro Centennial, 1873 - 1973
Historical edition

In the spring of 1848 Captain Ambrose B. White, wife and four children arrived in the area now known as Whitesboro from Springfield, Illinois.  He settled on the Old Wolf Path, which later became Main Street.
Sherman at this time consisted of one or two stores and a blacksmith shop.  Since the area was a wilderness with only one log house between where Whitesboro now stands and Sherman, the settlers who followed Capt. White chose to live in a neighborhood and called themselves "White Colony".  Capt. White later named the neighborhood "Westview Inn".
After the Civil War, a post office application was sent and the neighborhood was named "Whitesborough"; Capt. White was the first postmaster.
The first charter for the town was granted in 1873 with a total of 500 inhabitants.
There were private schools in the area before the Civil War.  The first one was taught by Miss Brink and her brother in their log cabin at the corner of Hall and Quillen Streets.
The next school was taught by Rev. S.D.H. Steed in his home.
The third private school was taught by Mrs. Armstrong in her log cabin home.
During the Civil War, Mr. Taylor, a lame man, taught a private school at the Westview Inn.
After the Civil War, school was held in a log house built to be used as a Masonic Hall.
The first public school building in town was built in 1889.
The first brick public school building was erected at College and Hall Streets.
The first recorded record of school size was found that in 1948 there were 21 teachers and the school was headed by W.B. Cooke.
The first religious congregation was the Baptists in town in 1856 under the direction of Rev. S.D.H. Steed and Rev. Asa Davis.  Early meetings were held in a log building on N. Union Street.
