Diamond, one of Whitesboro's oldest and best citizens, is seriously ill of catarrh of the stomach. His age and generally bad physical condition make his sickness very dangerous. A fire alarm was turned in from the residence of B.F. Newley Friday during the heaviest rain of that rainy day. The alarm was false, but the efficiency of our volunteer fire department was demonstrated. Chief Bass and ever member of the company were at the danger point in a few minutes after the alarm was turned in. Rev. J.R. Carmichael, Mrs. S.M. Lester, Misses Emma and Eunice Kelly and Maude Carmichael attended the B.Y.P.U. convention in Sherman Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Shanklin, estimable people of Whitesboro, celebrated the 40th anniversary of the wedding last Sunday. Their 3 daughters, Mrs. Lovett, Mrs. Donely, and Mrs. Myers, all of this city, together with their families were at home on this happy occasion and their only son, Ben Shanklin, came up unexpectedly from his home in Mineral Wells to be with them on this happy anniversary. T.E. Prater, an employe of the T. & P. at this place, who was badly injured by falling into a deep well at the depot some time ago, has returned from the company's hospital at Marshall and is now about to be out on the street with the aid of crutches. Dr. C.P. Smith, who recently moved here from Canton, Texas, has bought the interest of Mr. Taylor in the drug firm of Parrish and Taylor. The regular meeting of the Athenian Club was held Thursday afternoon with Miss Bessie Simpson. The program was a discussion of Easter. A leading feature of the work was an instruction paper prepared by Miss Mida McGillicuddy. The guests of the afternoon other than the club members were Mrs. T.F. Rodgers of Collinsville, Mrs. Frank Godwin. Mrs. Gailand Morton, Mrs. Steed. Mrs. Acton, Mrs. McCall, of Duncan, Oklahoma and Miss Hallie Buchanan. The refurbishing of the Odd Fellows and Masonic lodge room is about done and these orders have a lodg room which is modern in every particular. Whitewright Odd Fellows' degree team has accepted an invitation to do third degree work at the anniversary meeting which will be held in this city Saturday, April 25th. Misses Iris Summy, Loy Erwin, Birdie Lassiter, Nettie Roberts, Ethel Anderson and Beatrice McGinty attended the Epworth League conference in Pottsboro Tuesday and Wednesday. Rev. J.C. Robertson has returned from Central Missouri where he was called by the dangerous illness of his father, who died a short time after his son reached him. Mrs. L.P. Smith is visiting in Dallas and will go from there to Nashville, Tennessee, to attend the meeting of the National Home Missionary Society. Mrs. Kate Butler is at Pecan attending the Presbytery of the Cumberlan Presbyterian Church, as delegate from the Whitesboro congregation.
