The first telephone was installed in the brick store building owned by Ed. G. Beall.
The Van Alstyne Telephone Company came into existence in the late 1880's. Lyman Umphress was the second owner; the first owner is not known. Umphress sole it to Jim McLemore. He sold it to Texas Telephone Company who, then, sold it to General Telephone Company. Van Alstyne was connected to the dial system in 1958.
