C. E. Carter Opera House Van
Alstyne was the site of one of the first opera houses in North Texas.
It was built in the 1890's by Charlie E. Carter. The upper
front of the building was elegant in appearance, having fancy metal
work and trimming. The second floor of the building was the
location of the opera facilities. The first floor was the
location of Carter's Grocery.
Numerous noted musicians, actors and stock companies from Chicago performed in the C. E. Opera House, attracting crowds of people from the area. Entertainment was discontinued in 1910. The auditorium equipment was dismantled. Van Alstyne History Susan Hawkins © 2024 If you find any of Grayson County TXGenWeb links inoperable, please send me a message. |
