The Van Alstyne News was established about 1880 by J. Perry Leslie.  S. P. Evans, a school teacher, purchased the paper in 1890.  He operated the newspaper until his death.  His wife, Laura Bell Armour Evans, hired a Colonel E.K. Rudolph to publish the paper.  The next owner, John McComb owned the paper until Scott Fulton bought it, changing the name to the Van Alstyne Leader.

Since the late 1930s, the Leader has changed owners several times.  It is now published by Leader Publishing Company.
