January 9, 1896 Sherman Siftings James Miller was charged with selling intoxicants at Tom Bean, which is in the Whitewright justice precinct, under local option regulations. The jury found him guilty and assessed the punishment at a fine of $25 and twenty days in the Houston street jail. Dr. J.J. Devine of the same place was placed on trial for allegedly giving of a prescription for whisky, where he had made no examination and found whisky to be needed by the applicant.
