Tioga was incorporated in 1906, and the aldermaniac form of city government was adopted. The water system was put under municipal ownership. The city's assessed valuation was $300,00 and the city tax was 65c. This tax was separate from the school tax, which was 50c, asking a total of $1.15. The town then had one high school and one grade school. The first city officers to be elected under this system were: R.P. Wilson, Mayor Albert Leftwich, City Marshall At the present time, 1936, there are 8 mineral wells in operation in Tioga. The names of these wells and their owners are as follows: The Banner Mineral Wells, No. 1 & 2, owned and operated by C.C. Cannady The Star Well, owned and operated by J.M. Parks The Riddle Well, owned and operated by G.W. Riddle The Smith Well, "Eureka" Well and Number 4, operated by Owens The Scott Well, the Wilson Well and Number 4, operated by Tom Wooten. There are 3 people in Tioga who give the mineral baths, these are: Mrs. Nannie Qualls Mrs. Emma Shirley Tom Wooten. All of the present day owners of mineral wells in Tioga make and sell condensed water, mineral oil, and salves, except Owens, who runs a tourist camp in connection with his well. Business in Tioga was aided by the paving of the state highway in 1932. A fire destroyed part of the lower downtown business section in 1935. In 1936 Tioga has: 8 grocery stores 2 barber shops 1 dry goods store 4 garages 1 repair shop 2 beauty parlors 1 blacksmith shop 2 cares 2 hotels 1 tailor shop 1 ice house Tioga has many old aristocratic families and is proud to list among her native sons: State Senator Olan R. Van Zandt Gene Autry, the famous western screen and radio star.
