Tioga once had a square. Mershon wanted the business section to be located in the west end of town, near the railroad; Rogers wanted it further east, near (or on) his own property. The east section had a full square and was called San Diego. Some old-time residents still occasionally refer to it as San Diego. The west end consisted of buildings along both sides
of Main Street (now Gene Autry). None of the buildings are left that were around the old square. The old bank building was there until about 40 years ago, but it is gone now. The city hall and waterworks occupy the middle of the old square. In
1912 some local ladies donated an iron fence which was placed around the square. (Sadly the City of Tioga has torn it down, such a sad thing to see it gone). The square then consisted of a public park and water well.  They also donated hitching posts which were placed outside the fence. Two of the hitching posts are all the remains and they are on the porch of city hall. Hopefully they will never be distroyed.
