Memories

Tioga has changed quite a bit from when I was there, and like you, I would know very few people today.

Cloe and Lake Balch lived across the street from us, not even a house there now.  The Tollersons lived east of the Balchs.  We traded eggs for milk with them. Barbara Tollerson raised rabbits at one time and taught me to do the same.  Harry Gene Tollerson and I played together.

Across the street from the Tollersons was a family by the name of Peace.  A family of five, they lived in an eighteen foot trailer until they built a new house.

In that same area lived Noel Joe Riddle.  He was very good on the piano.  We co-wrote a song one time.  I think his mother may have worked for the city.

And I do remember Ross & Annie Estes.

West of the Balchs was McKnights.  Nancy McKnight was in the same grade with me.  Jimmy Hickman lived somewhere west of us.  So did Miss Couch.

South of us was an older couple named Gay.  He had a very nice machine shop in his garage.  He patented the hook that caught airplanes when they came in for a landing on the decks of carriers.  He had the first hook he ever built on display in his house.

Mr. & Mrs. Willis Branch lived south of us also.  Bro. Branch wrote several poems and songs, which I have a copy of.  They attended the Indian Creek Church where my dad pastored.

When growing up in Tioga, I mowed yards in the summertime to earn money.  One yard was for two old maids.  They would always invite me in for a cookie after mowing their yard and they would always lock the door when I came in.  Scared me half to death, but the cookies always won out.

I also pulled a lot of cotton for the Olivers, who lived out east of town.  Ruby Branch and some of the Carrigans also pulled cotton in the same fields.

Growing up in a small town during the 50s and 60s was quite interesting.

I have so very few pictures of anything connected with Tioga; guess we couldn't afford film back then.  I do have a couple - one from 2nd grade band and another, either 2nd or 3rd grade.
