METER-READER'S MULLE SAVES TIME, GASOLINE
by Keith Worsham
Tioga
- G.H. Finley of Tioga, who is water, street and sewer superintendent,
has discovered a solution to the gasoline shortage - a mule.
Until
last month, Finley spent as much as 2 days reading water meters for the
196 customers. Last week Finley rode hos mule and completed the
task in one day. The mule, Finley said, comes to each meter and
stops. After noting the meter number in a notebook, Finley climbs
back in the saddle and proceeds to the next meter.
The
Tioga man said he was surprised that the animal, known for its
patience, sure-footedness and stubborn disposition, would perform so
well.
"Actually,"
he added, "I'd much rather ride the mule than a horse for this job.
For one thing, it's not so far to climb down and the mule has
learned the job so well and he is easy to ride."
The
mule is used not only for this job, but also in area trail rides.
Sometimes he and his mate at the Finley place are hitched to a
small wagon used in parades and the like. Finley has a few horses
too.
The
superintendent, who has worked for the city since February 1, has
another animal which accompanies him on the meter-reading job. He
explained that when he first went to the city hall to begin hos duties
in February a small brown dog was waiting at the door. Ever since
that time, the dog hhas followed Finley daily. At first Finley
tried to discourage the dog from following him around. After
about 3 days, he gave up and claimed the dog as a pet. "He's a
good watchdog." Finley declared.
So
residents here are becoming accustomed to seeing Finley, the mule and
the dog, named Lady, passing by their homes once a month. Most
people just smile, shake theie heads, and wish they had thought
of mulepower.
