The Dallas Weekly Herald June 26, 1884 Burns City A Brand New Health Resort. Cooke County's Sanitarium - A Modern Pool of Bethesda, If a Correspondent Is to Be Credited ~ Low Living Rates Burns City, Cooke County, Texas, June 12 ~ (Correspondence) ~ This is fast becoming the popular mineral watering resort of Texas. I arrived here by private conveyance from Pilot Point, a distance of ten miles, and was astonished to find a blooming little city, though less than a year in growth. The water has already attained great celebrity as an almost infallibale remedy for all chronic diseaseas, curing rheumatism, dyspepsia, kidney diseases, cancers, chills, sick headache, sick stomach, sore eyes and blood diseases. I believe the water is said to give relief to everyone who had used it for the above complaints. The water has been conveyed from here in large quantities by wagon, as the owner of the principle mineral well, Mr. Burns, has declared the water shall shall be free for all. There are several fresh water wells in the town. Last August the first was erected and the sound of the hammer has not ceased since. It has been on a continued boom. Even as high as fifteen hundred visitors from Gainesville, Pilot Point, and the surrounding country have frequently congregated here to use the water and for pleasure purposes. Messrs. Burns and Giles, two farmers, own the land, and have been rapidly selling lots, even at a low price, to foster the rapid growth of the city. It is situated in a forest grove, with an elevated location. In its centre is a beautiful square of one acre, on which a well of inexhaustable, cold mineral water. The water has been sent off for analysis, but returns not yet received. The town is now incorporated as a city, one mile square, laid off partially into streets; has a Mayor, Alderman, and Marshall. There are a dozen business houses, one hotel, boarding houses, a commodious bath house, two shops, mill; large school building, Masonic hall. A local newspaper is also being established. The Narrow Gauge road surveyed or reviewed from Tyller to Gainesville also had its line run by this place. Men of capital are to grasp the opportunity and build more hotels and boarding houses, as the present are inadquate for the demand. Also to build houses to rent. More merchants with capital to put in heavy stocks of goods will find a rich harvest, and realize a big per cent on their money. Nor is the advancement of the city a mere temporary boom, but another element adds to its permanent and substantial growth, being located in the centre of a densely-settled farming country, with as rich and productive farm lands as can be found in Texas, combining these two great advantages, the best mineral water and a fine agricultural country. It has outstripped other mineral watering-places, and bid fair to become a city of considerable importance. Another first-class teacher of experience is wanted here to build up a high school. There are a hundred scholars in the district, and another teacher, with reputation, could draw several hundred more. The merchants from the smalls towns around are moving to Burns City to add to its growth. For those seeking health this is a good mineral water, where board is only $3 to $5 per week, and for those wishing to invest money where the property will double and triple each year, this is especially an inviting location. The city is accessible by hack from Gainesville, Pilot Point, and Collinsville, being only ten miles from the two former and eight from the latter.
