  Gene
Autry was on his way to broadcast his CBS radio program - live -
that afternoon from Berwyn, Oklahoma, which was changing its name to
Gene Autry, Oklahoma. When Gene left school, he went to work for
the railroad as a telegraph operator at Berwyn, Oklahoma. This is
probably the train station where Will Rogers heard Gene playing his
guitar & singing behind the desk. Will Rogers suggested that
he go to California; however, Gene worked in Tulsa, Oklahoma as a radio
personality for a while before going to California.  November 1941 Pleasant Pangs of nostalgia hit America's richest, most popular cowhand as he loafs about T ioga's general store. Old-fashioned party-line telephone on store wall brings Gene a gag call from t he "Vox Pop" show in New York.
