Denison, Texas Denison
Daily News
May 13, 1880 The Denison Herald having cast some reflections lately on that portion of the city known heretofore as Sugar Bottom, but now called Elm Bottom, (Councilman Hall) several property-owners and residents of that locality authorize the News to challenge the Herald to point out any potion of Denison (not excepting the fashionable street of Gandy,) that can boast of a more industrious, and orderly class of citizens, or one freer from slanderous reports. Sunday Gazetteer Sunday, May 17, 1880 pg. 3 EARLY DAYS IN DENISON Week ending May 15, 1880 Parson Hall informed the city council that the term "Sugar Bottom" was now obselete, and henceforth that honorable body should speak of that portion of the city as "Elm Bottom." The News expressed the opinion that the new name was too slippery to stick, and time has proved the correctness of the surmise, for that section is still known as "Sugar Bottom."
