Friday, November 2, 1928 pg. 3 DISASTROUS FIRE IN WEST GRAYSON Southmayd - The second disastrous fire in west Grayson within a week wiped out a dwelling and two-thirds of the business houses here Tuesday night, entailing a lost of approximately $15,000. Seven frame structures on the south side of the highway which forms the main street of the town were totally destroyed by a fire which started at midnight in the Owen Thurmond cafe near the center of the block. Every house in the block except the brick bank building, burned to the ground despite the efforts of 250 citizens and the Whitesboro fire department. Less than half an hour after a passing motorist saw the fire in the cafe and awakened several citizens, local people and the Whitesboro fire fighters, who worked more than 36 hours Saturday night and Sunday extinguishing the oil mill fire at Whitesboro, were organized to keep the fire from spreading. Water tanks and wells were used and all the hand fire extinguishers in town were brought out in an effort to confine the fire to the point of origin. With a stiff wind out of the northwest blowing directly across the blaze to a cotton yard 250 feet away, volunteer fire fighters experienced some difficulty in keeping $25,000 worth of cotton in the yard from igniting. None of the cotton was damaged by the fire, however. Southmayd History Elaine Nall Bay ©2022 If you find any of Grayson County TXGenWeb links inoperable, please send me a message. |
