Sherman, Tex., Dec. 5 - The crowded condition of the county jail is reported by Jailer Callahan to be very disagreeable and it was the pleasure that the presence of a State transportation agent was hailed at that institution last evening.  The following prisoners were taken from Sherman to Rusk this morning, via the Cotton Belt:

Paul Butler, cattle theft, ten cases, two years in each case.
Henry Watson, colored, burglary, four cases, two years each in three and three years in the other.
John Thomas, colored, theft of a horse, five years.
Rufus Pierson, alias Harrison, burglary, two years.
Joseph Rowan, theft of a valise valued at $60 or over, two years.
Dan Heed, theft of a horse, five years.
Alonzo Greenlief, theft of a mule, seven years.
J. W. Smith, theft of a mule, seven years and six months.
John Vaughn, alias, John Wilson, alias Henry Parsons, theft of horses, two cases, five years each.
There are thirty-seven remaining in the county jail.

John Hall, alias John Jones, was taken from his cell at the county jail this morning and carried before Justice Hinkle, who fixed his bond at $500.  He is charged with having burglarized a house and taking there from an oil coat belonging to James Scruggs, who captured him and turned him over to the police.

O. A. James, who received a sentence of seven and a half years in the State prison on the charge of theft of horses, was taken from his cell to the District Court room this morning and there received sentence.  There were two cases pending against him for theft of mules and these were not processed.  He was taken back to the jail.

Parties from Howe state that the crazy man Pitts, who made his escape from the south bound mail yesterday afternoon left the train near a section house seven miles from Sherman and two miles from Howe.  He struck the ground on his feet and ran off into a clump of bushes.

A base ball association was organized in this city last evening with about thirty members.  Capt. J. C. Edwards, president, Capt. J. H. Letellier, secretary and Ira Hall treasurer.

A MOONLIGHT RACE

Sherman, Tex., Dec. 27 - There was a dance in the country last night, at which a number of young folks were present.  All went along without anything to mark the occasion until the guests were dispersing.  Tom Bryant and Joe Embree proposed a race by moonlight, and it was to their sorrow.  After running a little distance they collided.  Bryant's right arm was broken in two places and received severe bruises and hurts about the body.  Joe Embree's left ankle was broken, one of the bones being shattered, and he received a deep gash cut under his left eye, completely displacing the eye from its socket.  A physician was summoned and assistance of a medical nature rendered.  At last accounts both of the young men were resting as easily as could be expected.  The affair has put a damper on what had promised to be a gay Christmas week in that section.
