Scull, Swain & Wallace Hardware The Sherman Courier
Wednesday, August 15, 1917 pg. 27 Fiftieth Anniversary Edition ODD SERVICE IN HARDWARE Modern Methods Employed To Render Efficient Service To The Public One of the most "live-wire" mercantile institutions in Sherman at this time is Scull, Swain & Wallace, hardware merchants, located at 105 North Travis Street. Scull, Swain and Wallace are a combination of the "old" and the "new" - but this does not mean that any member of the firm is old in years, but it does mean that this firm enjoys the good will and friendship of a long series of hardware service to the public in Sherman and Grayson county, coupled with the vim, push and enterprise of three of the most active and progressive young men today in the business life of Sherman - a combination that truly makes them a store of "Good Service." This firm is composed of J.J. Scull, S.C. Swain, and Arthur Wallace. J.J. Scull is a native of Mississippi, and while yet quite a young man he has spent sixteen years in the hardware business, three years of which he spent on the road as traveling salesman in Texas for Shapleigh Harware Company, selling a general line of hardware, the Shapleigh people being one of the leading concerns of the country in wholesale hardware, and the extensive knowledge Mr. Scull has of the hardware business acquired while on the road, handling absolutely everything and coming in contact daily with the leading hardware men of the country has given him a knowledge and an insight to the business which could not be otherwise obtained, and coupled with this knowledge is a pleasing personality and inborn courtesy which has endeared to him all those with whom he has come in contact since coming to Sherman and engaging in the hardware business nearly four years ago. S.C. Swain Mr. Swain is a native of Illinois and prior to his locating in business in Sherman, he also spent three years on the road as traveling salesman in Texas in the hardware business, and there is no better posted in hardware lines in general than S.C. Swain. While on the road Mr. Swain was also with Shapleigh Hardware Company. The Shapleigh people make a speciality of sporting goods, cutlery, bicycles, etc., and it is in these lines especially that Mr. Swain is a past master, having handled these lines while on the road for Shapleigh, and prior to his connection with Shapleigh, Mr. Swain was on the road for an ammunition factory, and he is an acknowledged authority along all these lines. But Mr. Swain does not confine his efforts to his own business by any means, but he especially as a representative of the firm, gives much time and thought toward the upbuilding of Sherman and Grayson County, and no public matter is ever before the people upon which Mr. Swain is not ready and willing to do his part, and being "willing," there is never a work to be done for the good of the townor county upon which Mr. Swain is not called upon and he always "delivers or makes good on the task assigned to him. One work especially in which Mr. Swain has rendered much public service has been through the Retail Merchants Association of which organization he has been director almost since the time of his coming to Sherman, and of which he now has the honor of being president. Arthur Wallace Everybody, so to speak, knows Arthur Wallace, and what is more, they know him as a hardware public servant. Mr. Wallace is probably the oldest man, in point of service, in the hardware business in Grayson county. His father before him had the leading hardware business in Sherman in the eighties, doing business under the name of "Wallace and Co.", and it was in this business that Arthur grew up as it were, and during all these years he has been connected with the hardware business in Sherman, serving the public in that capacity, and his friends are limited only to his acquaintances, and he perhaps knows as many people personally and intimately as any other man today living in Grayson county, and the combination of Scull, Swain and Wallace does indeed, and in fact, make a combination of "Good Service" to the public in their chosen line. In the employ of this firm is Joe Ireland, who has for a number of years been identified with the hardware business in Sherman, a young man of sterling character, energy and ability with many friends throughout the county. All modern methods in mercantile service are in vogue at the Scull, Swain and Wallace store, including auto delivery, bicycle messenger service for small packages and quick deliveries, and their store is modern and up-to-date in every respect, and their stock is one of completeness in every line and detail, and in both name and in practice they live up to their slogan - "Good Service."
