The Confederate Monument
Sherman, Texas

The Confederate Monument, located on the northeast corner of the Sherman, Texas square, was the first one to be erected in honor of Confederate Veterans in the state of Texas.

The project began in 1891.  The City Council of Sherman gave a plot in West Hill Cemetery for the burial of Confederate Veterans.  Adjutant Robert Walker, of the Mildred Lee Camp, United Confederate Veterans, had proposed the construction of an shaft in the cemetery as a memorial to all Confederate Veterans who were deceased.  A. Harrison thought enough funds could be raised for a monument on the courthouse square.  A committee was appointed which included A. Harrington, Capt. J. H. LeTellier, E. O. Thomas, Mrs. C. W. Brown, Mrs. J. H. Glascock and Mrs. J. E. Wharton.

The monument committee asked Warren Reed to sketch the monument and to include a figure of a soldier at the top.  This sketch was sent to St. Louis and the figure was made of bronze.  The shaft was quarried from Stone Mountain near Atlanta, Georgia.

The monument's corner stone was laid on April 3, 1896.  The final dedication and unveiling took place on April 21, 1897 - San Jacinta Day.
