Monday, September 21, 1874 pg. 2 SHERMAN ITEMS From their Special Correspondent September 21, 1874, 1 a.m. Summer doesn't like to hear any one talk "Common Sense." The Wadsworth hardware establishment has quitted the pretentious brick quarters of the past year, and removed to an old wooden building below the Southern Hotel. During the summer Sherman had but one Ice Cream Saloon, and the proprietor of that lost money on it. The meeting at the Baptist church continues with unabated interest. About 15 have been baptized. Some of Geo. Williams' customer have been grumbling just because he killed a hog with a sore head! After teaching the free school a week, Capt. LeTellier finds out he has never been appointed a teacher. He is disgusted with the --- trustees. Letters have been received by several parties from Clay and Archer counties, warning strangers against investing money in the "Archer and Wichita Mining Co.," and asserting that the Company doesn't own a foot of land in Archer or Wichita counties. There were not 10 bales of cotton brought to Sherman Saturday, and not twice that many during the week. There were 4 bales on the square up to 11:50 to-day. Price 12-1/2 to 13 cents. J.L. Randolph returned from New York yesterday. The fair grounds have not yet been repaired, although the fair is so near at hand. It is positively asserted now that the last meeting of the County Council declared Col. Chiles to be the Grange candidate for the Senate. Doc. Burns, formerly of the Southern Hotel, is now keeping hotel in the old Billiard Hall, corner of Walnut and Houston streets. McCamant & Co. have rented the adjoining brick to their store (formerly "Dramatic Hall,") and have opened a retail department where black tobacco and thin whiskey, are dispensed to the eager grangers. Willie Sadler wears a "solid gold" chain which cost $2.75. Reports say the grasshopper army are within 12 miles of Sherman, in a northwestern direction. The Macarthy's give their second performance Saturday night, to a good house. After the performance the band members demanded of Noyes $2 each to pay their wash bill. This Noyes refused. Noyes was afterward arrested for obtaining money under false pretenses at McKinney, and lodged in jail. No blame attaches to Macarthy, who says he will hereafter travel along.
