Intrepid Frontiersman Bought Savoy Site with Gold Nuggets

Savoy – To the much traveled founder of Savoy, the town must have seemed not dull, just very peaceful.

Even the typical roughness of a frontier town was quiet compared to some of the things Col. William Louis Marshall Savoy, who paid for the townsite here with gold nuggets, had done and seen.

Savoy was a world traveler, distinguished frontiersman, and according to his daughter years after his death in 1897, one of America's first secret service counterspys. Col. Savoy was born August 2, 1817 in Mississippi.
