LEAPS FROM SECOND FLOOR; ESCAPES DEATH

Pottsboro, Grayson Co., Texas, Nov. 22 - Trapped by fire in a second-floor bedroom, 14-year-old Herberta Potts escaped with minor bruises when she jumped from a window into the arms of neighbors, O.E. Scott and R.L. Markham, who had been attracted to the scene by the cries of the girl's mother, Mrs. H.C. Potts, at 1:30 o'clock Thursday morning.
Mrs. Emma Hayes, sister of Mr. Potts, narrowly escaped death when she fell unconscious at the foot of the stairs after groping her way through smoke and flames to the ground floor.  She was dragged from the building, however, before the flames reached her.  She suffered minor burns and her hair was singed as she went down the stairs.
Five people were asleep in the 2-story home of Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Potts when the fire started in the kitchen.  No one was seriously injured.  Mr. and Mrs. Potts were on the first floor and were awakened when the flames burst through a wall in their bedroom.  Frightened, they ran from the house and shouted for assistance.  Neighbors hurried to their aid as the flames advanced toward the front of the home amd cut off the stairway.  Origin of the fire was not determined.
Mrs. Hayes and Jim Riddle, an employe of Mr. Potts, escaped before the stairs were destroyed but Herberta returned to her room after realizing the danger of the burning stairs.
The house, valued with furnishings at approximately $10,000, was destroyed.
