Pottsboro was founded in 1878 when the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad pushed westward from Denison.

Surrounding land was owned by J. G. Thompson.  Mr. Thompson's daughter married J. A. Potts for whom the town was named after.  J. A. Potts was a prominent landowner and businessman and instrumental in the town's creation.

The MKT Railroad depot was named "Chambersville" which was later changed to Pottsboro.

The two-story Alice Hotel was located north of the depot on the east side of the street.

Main Street ran north and south. Businesses on Main Street included two banks, hardware stores, grocery stores, a department store, barber shop and garage.

In 1892, the east side of the business district was destroyed by fire.  It was again badly damaged in 1924 just one year after the west side was almost destroyed.

The Lingo Leeper Lumber Company which was a branch of the Denison firm was located in Pottsboro.

Churches in the community included Baptist, Church of Christ, Methodist and Presbyterian.

Pottsboro voted to consolidate with Willow Springs and Georgetown instead of Denison.  A new elementary school and high school were built in 1965.

Lake Texoma's coming kept the town alive and nearby Perrin A.F.B. gave it a tremendous boost.  Today, most of Pottsboro's economy is directed toward Lake Texoma.  Bait Shops, cafes, beauty shops, barber shops, garages, laundries, supermarket and other businesses are located on the east-west Highway through town.
