Pilot Grove News

The weather certainly h as been cold enough here the past few days to satisfy everyone who claims to enjoy winter.   Personally speaking, we prefer the good old hot summertime.
Several more fine, fat hogs were butchered here Monday.
There were no Sunday school or other church services here Sunday on account of the near zero weather.
School work was resumed Monday morning, following the week's holiday.   Both teachers and pupils report a fine time.
Charley Dossey, who has been at Clinton, Oklahoma, the past several months, spent the holidays here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.R. Dossey.
Miss Loyce Deberry of Whitewright was a guest of Miss Virginia Benson Friday.
Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Judd and Mr. and Mrs. George Parrish returned to their homes at Slaton Sunday, after a 2 weeks visit with relatives here.
Miss Edith Ward of Gainesville was a guest of relatives here Wednesday and Thursday.   She was accompanied home by her brother, Leonard Ward of San Antonio.
Simmie Ward spent the week-end with his uncle, Pressley Ward, and other relatives at Gainesville.
Miss Page Ashinhurst spent the week-end with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Henderson, at Sherman.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Benson and daughter, Miss Virginia, were McKinney visitors Thursday.
Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Perkins and children of Clinton, Oklahoma, have returned home after having spent the holidays with Mrs. Perkins' parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.R. Dossey.
Moton Ashinhurst was a Sherman visitor Sunday.
J.W. Chism and family moved to Red River County last week. Lois Chism is moving to the place vacated by Mr. Chism.
Other moving is taking place this week. Taylor Scott, who has occupied the Kilgroe place, moved near Sunny Hill, and P.A. Kilgroe is moving to his home here.
The work of resurfacing the division of road from west of Cannon to the Bow Corner was begun last week.  On account of the rain and bad weather, the work has been hindered, but 20 or more wagons ...others yet to begin, are moving a considerable amount of gravel in a day.
Vondelee Matthews of Leonard spent last week with Miss Viola St. John.

Doss Chism and sister, Miss Lois, who are attending school at Commerce, spent Saturday and Sunday here with friends.
D.W. Garland of Ft. Worth was a business visitor here Tuesday.
Leonard Ward of San Antonio, who has been visiting  relatives at Gainesville is a guest of his brother, Simmie Ward, and other relatives here.
Prof. W.A. Smart of Denison was a visitor here Saturday.
S.F. Garland was in Dallas Tuesday.
Cecil Waldrop, who underwent a serious surgical operation at Sherman a few weeks ago, was able to return to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Waldrop, Friday.
Harve Reynolds, Ernest Andrews and Boss Garland were among those who went to Sherman Friday evening to see the basketball game between Sherman and S.M.U.
Mr. and Mrs. Byron Caraway were Sherman visitors Saturday.
Mrs. S.T. McSpedden, Mrs. Merritt and  Mrs. Bernice Davis were guests Friday of  Mrs. J.L. McSpedden in Whitewright.
Miss Irene Rector of Whitewright was a week-end guest of Miss Virginia Henson.
Several from here went to Howe Saturday to see the ball game between Howe and Gunter.
Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Sloan spent Sunday in Sherman.
A.L. and John Scott attended the quarterly Methodist conference of the Anna charge of Anna Sunday afternoon.
Several from here went to Pink Hill Sunday afternoon to attend the district singing, which was held at that place.
Misses Maurine May and Marian Barbee spent the week-end in Whitewright.
Mr. and Mrs. Gus Holmes and son, Max, of Trenton were guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. P.A. Gilgroe.
O.J. Neathery and family of Sherman were guests of relatives here Sunday.
Rev. and Mrs. M.C. Sooter and daughter, Miss Marie, of Anna were visitors here Tuesday.
Howard Judd, who has a position at Slaton with the Santa Fe R.R. Co., wrote his mother last week that their basketball team had just played the team at Albuquerque, New Mexico, winning by a score of 19 to 1 3.  Howard said he won 8 points to his credit in the game.
Miss Myrtle Cook, 6th and 7th grade teacher, accompanied her junior basketball team to Bethel Wednesday afternoon, where they played the little boys of that school, winning with a score of 10 to 4 .
The senior basketball team played their second interscholastic league game with Pink Hill Wednesday, winning with a score of 40 to 19.
Mrs. A.G. Cox, J.B. Ownby and Miss Dell Ownby of Wolfe City and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Gentry of Greenville were guests Thursday of J.L. Taylor and family.
Leonard and Simmie Ward spent Sunday in Wolfe City with their cousin, Maurice Davis.
Work of rebuilding the garage here is under way this week.  G.W. Judd has leased the property and will be in business there in the near future.
Prof. Byron Caraway accompanied the boys' basketball team to Sherman Monday afternoon for practice on the indoor court there preparatory to the final game for the season between Pilot Grove and Bells.
Mrs. Annie Wilson and Mrs. Lee Hulett were called to Sherman Saturday morning by the serious illness of their niece, Mrs. Bertha Cameron.
Mr. and Mrs. Clint Hopper and Mr. and Mrs. Charley Kaiser spent Saturday night in Sherman with relatives.
Rufus Scott, who is attending school at Commerce, spent the weekend here with home folks.
W.S. Barr, the 10-year-old nephew of the Scott brothers, who was so seriously crippled in an auto accident in Amarillo last fall, is here for an extended visit with relatives.  He is able to go on crutches and may in time be completely restored to normal health.
Mrs. W ill Knox of Canadian was a guest Thursday night of her cousin, Mrs.  S.T. McSpedden.
Funeral services for J.G. Knox, who died at the home of his son, J.B. Knox, at Happy, Texas, were conducted at the Methodist Church Thursday at 3 p.m. by Rev. T.W. Lovell, pastor of the Trenton Methodist Church. Interment was at the Pilot Grove Cemetery.   Mr. Knox was nearing his 89th birthday.  He was born in Tennessee and came to Texas about 1880 with his family. His wife died here in 1897.  For a  good many years Mr. Knox had made his home with his son at Happy.  He is survived by 4  sons.   The f uneral was attended by many of his old neighbors and some who had known him in younger days in the old state.  Brief testimony as to his life and character as neighbor, citizen and Christian was given by some of those who had known him.   Relatives from a distance who attended the services were: Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Knox, Happy; Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Knox and sons, Wheeler and Lester, Amarillo; Bennett Knox, Yuma, Arizona; Mrs. Will Knox, Canadian; Mrs. A.G. Cox, J.B. Ownby, Miss Dell Ownby, Wolfe City; and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Gentry, Greenville.
