Denison Daily News Wednesday, September 17, 1879 WHISKY CRAZE The Six Shooter in Pilolt Grove Correspondence Sherman Courier Pilot Grove, Texas September 12, 1879 For a long time this place has been quiet; there has nothing of an evil character transpired to mar or chill the good feelings of the best citizens, until this morning. We rode into town just in time to witness a crime of would-be blood. While Messrs. R.M. Lively and J.H. Barrett were sweeping the awning floor in front of Q. Dumars Bro.'s store, Mr. Lewis Dumas was standing on the floor, and immediately south of Lively & Barrett's. One James Netherly walked to the front of Joe Morrison's saloon, and with revolver in hand, deliberately leveled and fired 2 shots at Mr. Dumas; fortunately none of them took effect. The cause of the would-be murder is a mystery to us. Mr. Nethery is a young man, about 19 years of age, and is regarded by all, to bne a youth of superior talent and in every way a nice boy. We suppose that too much whisky had a great deal to do with the affair. This did not seem to quiet his wrath. Rev. Hays was passing along the street on horseback, when the same revolver was leveled at him, but failed to fire; the parson rode up to us with a pale face and trembling voice, while we endeavored to relieve him by saying that we supposed it was a drunk. This did not seem to satisfy him much, but was the best we could do, under the circumstances. Mr. Nethery heretofore has been a quiet, good boy, and we hope that he will hereafter give some explanation of his act.
