Lyman Wight entered into
Texas at the Red River town of Preston in November 1845 with
approximately 150 Mormons. He was convinced that Texas was the new
"Zion". Wight, a member of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles of the Mormon
Church, believed that he was second in command after the death of
Joseph Smith the Prophet, who was the founder of Mormonism.
Wight refused to accept the leadership of Brigham Young. He left the Utah bound group and led his own group to Texas. The Mormons remained in Grayson County at the site that became known as Mormon Grove. They left this location in the summer of 1846, traveling the Preston Road south. They settled near Austin on the Colorado River. source: Sketches from the Five States of Texas by A. C.
