In October 1862, a group of men were rounded up approximately sixty miles west of Kentuckytown at Gainesville,
Cooke County, Texas. Forty of them were hanged. Two other men tried to escape and were shot and killed. The men were members of a secret organization that was suspected of plotting against the Confederacy with plans to generate uprisings among the Indians and slaves.
