Friday, December 29, 1916 FIVE ROBBERS BLEW SAFE Got $5000 and Made Safe Get-Away in Automobile at Hagerman By Associated Press Sherman, Texas, Dec. 29 - Five robbers blew the safe of the Hagerman State Bank at Hagerman, 15 miles northwest of here, early this morning and escaped in an automobile with $5000 of the funds of the bank. As the robbers entered their automobile they exchanged several shots with citizens but so far as is known none of the bandits were injured. It took 6 explsions to open the safe. In
1917 robbers took about $3,000 [sic] from the bank during a
shootout, leaving holes in the house of Hunt Smith." At the 1967
town reunion Balford Morrison related his memories of the bank robbery.
"Papa said, 'lay down and be quiet.' I thought the shots
were down at the creek but they were next door." " Bank robbers had
dynamited the safe and someone was shooting at them. The last we
ever heard of the men was their old Model T starting up and heading
toward the river." ("Hagerman, Now Only A Memory." Sherman Democrat, July 4, 1976) Sherman Daily Democrat Saturday, March 10, 1917 pg. 4 FAIL TO IDENTIFY Several men from Hagerman were in Sherman yesterday afternoon and visited the county jail in an effort to identify Sam Hightower, confined there on a charge of being a fugitive from justice as the tramp seen in Hagerman on the day of the blowing of the bank vault several months ago. None of them who saw Hightower could positively state whether or not he was the same man, and Hightower will be held for officers to be taken back to the state prison.
