The Vannoy store was across the street from the old Church of Christ
and was run by Guy Vannoy. The store dated all the way back to
when Ethel was a thriving community. Just between the store and
the road just south of it was a cotton gin, so the store did a lot of
business. The
store sat on what is today FM 902. The road going from there is
now Hog Creek Road. There is a west Hog Creek Road and an East
Hog Creek Road. Hog Creek Road runs east and west and "T's" off
into Graham Grove Road. I have been in the store when it was still open for business and I have a vivid recollectgion of what it looked like. The store sat pretty high off the ground and had steps to climb up to enter the store. It also had an awning that stuck out to the east side and a porch that had old benches on both sides of the door. When I was a kid, I can remember there being an old gas pump sitting under the awning where cars could pull under to get gas. The most peculiar thing I remeber is that the grond under the awning was littered with soda pop bottle caps. There were layers after layers of bottle caps that were taken from inside the store from the old soda pop box and just thrown outside on the ground under the ausning. Instead of having a concrete or gravel driveway, the store had a soda pop bottle cap driveway. There was indeed an area in the back of the store with a table and chairs, but the game of choice wasn't cards, it was dominoes, and there was a fierce competition for the local standing of best domino player.
