DORCHESTER GIN GETS FIRST BALE
The first bale of cotton for the 1961 Grayson season was ginned Thursday, one day earlier than the first bale for 1960. The cotton season is expected to be in full swing by Aug. 25. The seed cotton, 1,920 pounds, came from the same area as the first cotton last year, and was brought into the Dorchester Gin by L.W. McWhorter of the Ethel community. McWhorter, in addition to the market price for his cotton and seed, will receive a $25 premium offered by the Grayson County State Bank, Sherman. McWhorter's cotton ginned out to 488 pound bale of lint and 780 pounds of seed. The first bale of 1960 cotton was brought in by Bob Light of Collinsville... McWhorter has been raising cotton since 1931, but this is the first season he has brought in the first bale. He gleaned the load from some 16 acres planted in the Northern Star variety. McWhorter has 200 acres under cotton and expects to harvest a half bale to the acre. The second bale of cotton, a 549-pounder, was brought to the Farmer's Co-op Gin, Gunter, about 10 a.m. Friday by C.M. Miller, Sr. of Gunter. The bale was processed from 2--- pounds of seed cotton, F.D. Recknor, gin manager said. The cotton was of the Northern Star variety, and was strict middling with a 1-1/32 inch staple.
