Sunday, October 6, 1889 pg.1 ELECTRIC STREET LIGHTS Sometime ago the mayor appointed a committee to take into consideration the propriety of ordering additional electric street lights, and to examine into the several propositions made to the city for furnishing lights. The report of the committee was submitted to the council last Thursday night, and as it is a subject of interest to all citizens of the city, we give it in full: To the Honorable Mayor of the City of Denison: Your committee on lights to whom was referred the respective propositions of J.B. McDougall & Co. and the Houston-Thompson electric company, have had the same under consideration and beg leave to report as follows: We recommend that the city contract with J.B. McDougall & Co. for the erection and maintenance of 24 arc electric lights in addition to the ten already doing services, making 34 in all, at the rate of $10.50 per month each, said contract to exist for two years, and that said lights be placed as follows, subject to change of location in the future as the council may conceive to be for the best general interest: At corner of Houston & Gandy At corner of Morton & Austin At corner of Houston & Bond At corner of Burnett & Gandy At corner of Burnett & Bond At corner of Gandy & Mirick At corner of Gandy & Armstrong At corner of Crawford & Barrett At corner of Rusk & Morgan At corner of R.R. crossing & Mirick At corner of Sheppard & Armstrong At corner of Main & Chandler At corner of Main & Armstrong At corner of Barrett & Munson North end of viaduct on Austin South end of viaduct crossing Day & Austin Crockett & Chestnut Crockett & Nelson Austin & Monteray Crossing of Central near Fannin & Texas Armstrong & Hull Tone & Morgan Bond & Austin We also recommend that the following gas lights be discontinued: From Gandy & Rusk From Gandy & Austin From Morton & Austin From Barrett & Bond From Gandy & Fannin From Gandy & Mirick From MIrick & Woodard From Woodard & Armstrong From Mirick & Crawford Two from R.R. crossing on Mirick and Scullin Your committee would here state that it finds great difficulty in locating these lights permanently, to the best interests of the city or its citizens, so rapidly is our city forging ahead in improvement, and to keep pace with it is difficult in almost every department of the city government, and therefore allowance must be made for any mistake your committee has possibly made in this work, and they advise that such contract be entered into as will be open for further amendments. We also report that there are a number of localities in total darkness that cannot be supplied by the present recommendation where gas can be very advantageously utilized, but your committee has no knowledge of the gas company's intentions to supply the same except where there mains are now located.
