21 April 1946 IMPORTATION OF BULLS BY KRAFT IMPROVES DENISON-AREA DAIRYING Dairying
in the still fertile, relatively unexplored Red River Valley today has
advanced farm from that period when this mighty industry was of little
consequence. A lot of credit for the advancement could be traced
to the work of such wide-visioned organizations as the Kraft Food
Company.
Kraft, the company that introduced the production of cheese and its allied products to this area several months ago, opened a new program - a long-range project designed to improve butterfat records per cow, a plan scheduled to aid in pulling Texas out of 45th place in the nation in butterfat per cow. Kraft's program, designed to make dairying more profitable to the producer, has resulted in the sale of 84 Jersey cows and 11 bulls for breeding purposes in the Denison area alone. All the animals were purchased under the supervision of expert Kraft fieldmen and sold to the company's producers in this area on both cash and loan deals. In February, Kraft's Southwest Division headquarters here imported three brown Swiss bulls into this territory in a precedent-setting move. Since, the company has brought in 13 more of the sturdy, dual-purpose brown Swiss bulls, five star Jersey bulls and two Holstein bulls. PLANS CAREFULLY LAID Importation of the bulls into this area was done after careful study and was aimed at increasing the quantity of milk production by making available to Kraft patrons full-blooded sires at a nominal cost. The cows were located and sold to the producer to replenish milk herds and the several herds in this area have seen the affects of the company's thoughtful program. Brown Swiss bulls, whose off-spring are good for milk production and for beef marketing, have been purchased in the Denison area by D.O. Beard of Denison, Luther and Alvin Cook of Pottsboro, Dr. E.L. Hefley of Denison who already had used the sturdy animals before, R.E. Edwards of Denison, W.L. Shires of Pottsboro, and R.B. Graves, who resides west of Denison. Others have been sent here to Kraft installations in Arkansas and Oklahoma, including one to Carlisle, Arkansas, three to Altus, Oklahoma, and two each to Hollis and Sayre, Oklahoma. Star Jersey bulls have been sold here to W.H. Coffey, W.J. McDonald, both of Pottsboro, Stanley Tapscott of Denison, W.C. Fink of Calera, Okla., and J.P. Carle of Sherman. PURCHASERS OF COWS Registered Jersey cows have been sold to W.H. Coffey of Pottsboro, who has taken seven thus far; Lee Terry, Denison, five; Elmer Richards, Denison, three; H. Vicks, Denison, five; M.D. Moss, Denison, six; Ben Durham, Desert, 10; W.J. McDonald, Pottsboro, six; W.D. Benedict, Denison, eight; R.B. Graves, Denison, eight; C.C. Mullican, Desert, six; G.S. Guffie, Desert, 15; and Roy R. Hughes, Denison, five. The cows and bulls have been imported from all sections of the country. Many have come from some of the best herds in the country found in the rich dairying area of Wisconsin and in other sections of that part of the nation. Thirteen Brown Swiss and two Holstein bulls only a few days ago were brought to Denison from crack herds at Arlington, Kan.... DENISON HISTORY
