Friday, April 8, 1949 pg. 1 THIRD MAN IN RACE GETS SMALL VOTE; INAUGURATION NEW MAYOR HELD APRIL 6 In one of the closest races for naming a mayor of Denison Tuesday, Harry Glidden was elected over his nearest opponent, Ben Burget, by a majority of 133. Glidden received 1183 votes and Burget polled 1050. The third man in the race, Lonnie Roberts, a perrenial candidate, polled ten votes. In a special session held by the city commissioners, Mr. Glidden was sworn in Wednesday afternoon, City Attorney Wm. M. Malone, administering the oath. Mr. Glidden has made the race before for mayor and also for city commissioner, polling a sizeable vote each time. "I shall do my best to make Denison one of its best officials. I shall serve all the people in every way and show partiality to no one or group. It will be my aim to find out what is needed to be completed at the earliest date any unfinished task that is now in the process of being fulfilled. As fast as is possible to do this for Denison I shall lend my best effort. In it all I ask for the united cooperation of all the people." Both Mr. Glidden and Mr. Burget had the backing of numerous influential citizens, themselves personal friends. There was no friction between the two groups of backers and it will be like Denison to close ranks and back the man whom the people of the city have named as their man. The lone commissioner to be elected to work with the mayor had no opposition and Glen Hanan went back into office for his second term. The other commissioner, a holdover, George Stratton, is serving his first term and has one more year to go. At the special meeting to swear in the new mayor Wednesday afternoon at 1:15 o'clock, several citizens were present to witness the event and extend congratulations and pledge support to the two successful gentlemen whose names appeared on the ballot. The vote by wards for the three candidates as follows:
