THE PAVING OF MAIN STREET
Voluntary Subscriptions Continue to Grow and Near $3,000 Mark
VERY HANDSOME DONATIONS
Baity Gave the Committee $300 Yesterday - The Petition to be Presented to the Council and Those Who Have Signed it
"Baity beats the bunch," said a member of the Main street paving committee to a Herald man yesterday afternoon with a broad smile.  The reason for this quotation of the familiar slogan was that the committee had just secured Mr. Baity's signature to the subscription list of the Main street paving fund for $300.
The fund continues to grow, lacking up till last night only $55 of being $3,000.  One of the gratifying things in connection with the subscription is that it is so largely a popular one.  Very few people approached turn the project down, everyone being willing to help a little to accomplish the beginning of permanent street work in Denison.
The following are the subscriptions up to last night not yet acknowledged:

Below will be found the petition to the council which has been circulated among the Main street property owners of real estate upon Main Street between the tracks of the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad  Company on the east and Mirick avenue on the west, feeling that it is necessary to impove Main street within the distance aforesaid by paving said street with brick, and that the real estate abutting on such proposed improvement will be specially benefitted thereby, and that it is just for the owners or owners of such real estate so especially benefitted to pay a portion of the cost of so paving said street, do hereby respectfully request that your honorable body pass a resolution defining the limits aforesaid as limits within which all real estate will be so especially benefited by such proposed improvement and that such real estate within said limits shall be known as improvement district number 2, when so established.
We further respectfully ask that such real estate should be designated as being especially benefited by such proposed improvement to the extent of not to exceed $135 for each 25 feet fronting and abutting on Main street, and that the street car line be designated as being especially benefited by such proposed improvement to the extent that it may cost to pave the track and one foot on each side thereof.
We respectfully request that the city engineer be directed to prepare and submit to the city council an estimate of the cost of such improvement as required by law, and that the provisions of the law in force in the city of Denison with reference to improvement districts be compiled with; but it is the wish of the undersigned that the city council make such improvements within said district by causing the said street to be paved with brick, and that so much of the cost of such improvement may be assessed against the property owners shall be levied as a special tax against their property in such manner as to permit the same to be paid at any time within ten years, the tax bills or bonds issued against said property to bear interest at not to exceed 6 per cent per annum.
