Man in the Tolls.
Deputy Sheriff Hensing of Stevens county, Kansas, passed through the city to-day, having in custody a man by the name of Lew Whittenbrock, who was captured near LaGrange. Whittenbrock, it is alleged, disappeared with another man's wife, after appropriating $1500 which belonged to his stepfather. Shortly after their arrival in Texas it is said the woman left him for an abandoned life at San Antonio. She wrote a letter a short time since to Whittenbrock's stepfather; it is claimed, revealing his whereabouts, which resulted in his capture.
City politics in Denison are at a boiling heat. During the past year five of the city councilmen seemed to have had a unity of purpose and action, and as such some one classed them as the "Big Five", and the issue is now to destroy their strength by electing councilmen who are opposed to them. Just what the result will be no one can tell, as the city seems to be quite evenly divided. Under the management of the "Big Five" there has been more permanent and substantial public improvement than ever before under one council, and a number of heavy damage suits against the city have been provided for. To say the least, the issues are largely personal, and those who have the most personal friends will be elected.
