A Talk
with Carl Waltz
Ray Clymer Jr. had trained dogs that would walk a tight wire. He was older than Carl. He'd be running those dogs across the tight wire stretched up 7 foot. He was asked to appear on shows around town with those dogs. They'd jump through hoops, dk if he had flaming hoops, walk down ladders, he really put some effort into it, got some applause but I don't think he got rich on it. DP&E--I had trouble distinguishing the two plants. As a child, they were the acknowledged leader to me. There was another egg-breaking plant called Hennessy located out near Kraft Foods, where it leased space. Farmers would bring in milk and route operators would pick it up and also would bring in eggs, so it was real handy to deliver both to the same location. Eggs would be sprayed to the top as a liquid, would be heated & would fall to the bottom as a powder. There were 2 characters, one named Dick White, he was as hardboiled & rough & tough as anyone could be. Maybe he was a member of the mafia. He rubbed me the wrong way continually. He'd come into the store & order something, & two minutes later, he say "What in the blankety-blank am I waiting for?" He had a horrible temper & attitude. The other character was a guy who became a home builder, he was the bookkeeper. Maurer. He'd give me about the same trouble with books and bills as Mr. White would with ordering. He wasn't the best bookkeeper, in my opinion, or accountant. But when he became a builder, I knew he didn't know anything about that. And here I am now working on some of the houses he built, he cut some corners that shouldn't have been cut, esp. electrical corners. I wondered what kind of a mess he made at the DP&E. Uncle Ray was a nice guy, never had any trouble with him. But his henchmen!
