Sunday, December 30, 1888 pg. 2 1879 Jan. 1 - W.H. Taylor and Miss Mary E. Chamberlain were married by Judge Riddle. Jan. 2 - At the regular meeting of the City Council, Councilman Peck introduced an ordinance regulating the amount of occupation tax. Jan. 3 - Switchman Leary, of the H. & T. C. freight train #11, in charge of Conductor Telfair, was killed by falling between the cars at Van Alstyne, at 2 o'clock a.m. Jan. 5 - Mrs. May Werner, nee Mahon, wife of Prof. M.L. Werner, died at 6 a.m., of congestion of the lungs. Jan. 6 - The lunch counter and contents belonging to Waddill & Schmucher, along with 2 H. & T. C. passenger coaches, was consumed by fire....Lowest temperature ever recorded at the signal station of t his city - minimum 1. Previous to this the lowest temperature was 5 on December 5, 1876. Jan. 7 - Mr. Tobias Porter, proprietor of the Dollar Store, made an assignment. Liabilities about $16,000. Mr. Fred Muller was appointed assignee. Jan. 8 - The old folks gave a grand ball at the Alamo Hotel....Deepest snow that had fallen in the city - 5" - since 1875, w hen the fall was 12". Jan. 9 - Carl Hoffman retired from the gun and locksmith business, Sheeder & Beebe taking charge of his equipment. Jan. 11 - The dry goods house of M. Singer was robbed. Jan. 15 - Joseph Brenner, an old citizen was stabbed by Julius Tuttle. Jan. 17 - The funeral train of Hon. Gustave Schleicher arrived in the city...Mr. Gray, in a destitute condition, died of pneumonia...Jesse Campbell was killed at Daingerfield by J.W. Jones. Jan. 18 - Joseph Brenner died from the effects of a stab inflicted by Julius Tuttle. Jan. 22 - The Dinsmore block, the property of Mrs. Dinsmore, and the house adjoining, owned by Dr. H.S.D. Berry, were destroyed by fire...The ordinance introduced by Councilman Waltz, regulating the building of sidewalks on Main street, was passed. Jan. 23 - The hose carriage "Little Phil" arrived. Jan. 25 - The stores of Mr. John Nevins, general merchandise; F. Ledrick, furniture and queensware; J.J. Collins, groceries, and the shoe shop of A. Uhlig, were consumed by fire. Also the offices of John C. Montgomery, Thos. Hoffman, Ed. Zintgraff, R.C. Foster and the Gas & Coal Company. Jan. 26 - First shipment of cattle over the D. & P. arrived in the city...Col. W.H. Day was united in wedlock to Miss Mable Doss, of Sherman. Feb. 3 - Ben Grant was shot in the face by Jack Murray, alias Buffalo Jack, at the Bank Exchange. Murray was pursued by Constables Nelms and John Holford, and was shot and killed near the compress by the latter... Hose company disbanded. Feb. 4 - Hose company organized, H.K. Weedham, president, and Harry Mamlock, foreman. Feb. 5 - Mr. A.A. Harrison, an M.K. & T. engineer, residing in this city, and Miss Lizzie Smith, of...at the latter place...O'Dair & McConnell opened up a line of groceries. W.D. Coakeley, assistant deputy cotton weigher, died of consumption. Aged, 34 years. Feb. 7 - Ground was staked off for the building of D. & P. depot by Contractor G.W. Mellville...N.P. Browning, brother-in-law of Alex. Reddick, died of erysipelas in the 52nd year of his age...Frank Borsch, 30 years old, died of meningitis. Feb. 10 - An ordinance defining the fire limits, was passed. Also an ordinance condemning certain streets and alleys for the use of the Denison & Pacific... An attempt was made to fire the Alamo hotel...M.K. & T. tool car No. 1 arrived in the city and was put in charge of Frank Howard. Feb. 12 - Mr. Max Grundstein was united in marriage to Miss Therese Eppstein, of St. Joseph, Missouri. Feb. 14 - Frank Yeatman died of consumption at the Planters House. Feb. 15 - Steve French and Dr. W.M. Nagle purchased the Live Drug Store...James Nelms, Jr., infant son of James A. Nelms, died of congestion of the bowels. Feb. 17 - Statement of the public schools given by N. Somerville, principal: No. of pupils registered, 411, of whom 466 were in daily attendance...Dr. George H. Gray, of this city, committed suicide by shooting himself through the head at New Orleans...Dick Shipler was run over near Hearne by the cars and lost a limb. Feb. 18 - Mr. Chas. Burkle and Miss Carrie Cullen were united in the bonds of wedlock, Rev. J.T. Wright officiating. Feb. 22 - A bouncing baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. John C. Montgomery. Feb. 23 - Messrs. O'Dair & McConnell, grocers, Raney & Irvin, liquor dealers, Wood & Co., grocers, Paul Servantie, lunch dispenser, J.D. Ourand, liquor dealer, "Pap" Tobin, restaurant proprietor, Ryder, proprietor lunch stand, Landorf, proprietor cigar store, Melzer Bros., tonsorial artists, and Dr. J.O. Williams were burned out. Aggregate losses, $ 6,000; insurance $3,200. Feb. ?? - Born to Mr. and Mrs. John R. Carr, a baby girl. March - Postoffice moved to Hibbard building. March 5 - A little girl called on Mr. and Mrs. Joe Brutsche. March 6 - A number of trees purchased for the High School grounds. March 8 - John C. Montgomery elected vice-president of the Denison Gas & Coal Co. March 18 - Mrs. Mary Emerson buried. March 19 - Edward Perryman and Miss Mattie Reardon were married. March 25 - John Pettigrew and Mrs. J.C. Smith were married. April 2 - Total indebtedness of city, $60,303.95. April 7 - Resolution to change city charter and levy ad valorem tax of 3/8 of 1% for maintenance of public schools was passed by Council. April 22 - George Brunett and Miss Mary E . James were married. April 26 - Twin girls at Mike Yawman's house. April 28 - A little boy came to reside with Jim Moreland...Mrs. Hannah Platter died. April 29 - Russell-Mitchell nuptials solemnized...Dunne-Brown ditto---Cross-Jeffers ditto April 30 - Pressed brick works put in operation. May 1 - Crabtree-Chambers matrimonial knot tied. May 4 - Chas. Litsinger and Ora Welty were married. May 8 - May Harder died. May 17 - J. Neudorfer suicided. May 27 - Louis Lebrecht and Miss Fanny Pollard were married. June 1 - Councilman Raynal introduced an ordinance to keep the city schools free from sectarian influences. Carried. June 9 - Lowenthal-Carr made one. June 11 - W.M. Peck elected mayor. June 13 - Public schools closed for annual vacation...First meeting of Council under the Peck administration...Little Nettie Welty departed this life. July 4 - This day will be remembered by all old citizens as the "Bloody Fourth." Constable Jim Nelms was killed a the Bank Exchange by Charley Russell, who, in turn, was killed in the upper story of the same building by Special Officer Jim Massey. Charley Colbert was seriously wounded by Russell. An Indian named Napoleon Anderson was killed by unknown parties in the rear of Wolfe's saloon. July 8 - Rusk Avenue Hotel burned. July 12 - Special meeting of Council to establish quarantine. W.H. Winn and Dr. J.A. Malcolm were appointed quarantine officers. July 14 - Society Vorwaerts made last payment ($165) on their property. July 16 - A little girl made the hearts of Mr. and Mrs. Rus Legate glad. July 20 - Charley Moulton died. July 21 - Infant son of H.M. Yocom died...Jas. E. Harrison and Miss Lena Williams were married. July 24 - Edward Henry Bates, aged 8 years, son of Geo. D. Bates, died. July 27 - Colored Baptist church burned. July 29 - Attempt made to burn Presbyterian church. Aug. 4 - Justin Raynal died. Aug. 13 - Willie A., son of Mr. and Mrs. J.K. Daughters, died. Aug 26 - Mrs. M.T. Brown's residence burned. Aug. 31 - Mrs. N. Somerville died. Sept. 2 - John Parker suicided. Sept. 4 - Ed. P. Tingle, aged 24, died. Sept. 8 - Richard Williams died...Lowest fine for carrying concealed weapons was raised from $5 to $25...Mr. H.K. Needham and Mrs. M.S. Dinsmore were married. Sept. 11 - Capt. J.R. Saunders died. Sept. 14 - Little son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Maxwell died. Sept. 16 - Mr. Mike Hanna and Miss Maggie Sadler were married. Sept. 18 - Mr. Joe E. Johnson, of this city, and Miss Bailey, of Corsicana, were married. Sept. 25 - Gate City Guards gave a ball in honor of the 7th anniversary of the city. Oct. 8 - Mr. Adolph Lendorf, aged 34 years, died. Oct. 16 - Mr. Jacks and Miss Lumley were married. Oct. 21 - Mr. Thomas B. Waldron, of this city, and Miss Delia Lane, of Beloit, Wisconsin, were married, at the latter place. Oct. 23 - E. Forrest Pecor and Miss May Emory were united in marriage...Hall's mill and cotton gin and 5 other frame buildings, destroyed by fire. Oct. 28 - Mr. Timothy Murphy and Miss Emma B. Roach were united in marriage. Oct. 29 - William O'Brien died from a fit. Oct. 30 - Policeman Joseph Johnson was shot and instantly killed by a Negro named Frank Porter...Mr. Pat Tobin and Miss Jessie Cameron were married....Mr. Will J. Jennings, of this city and Nettie Sampson, of Buchanan, were married, at the latter place. Nov. 5 - Negro murderer of Policeman Johnson captured...Mr. Dan Brown and Miss Alice Caldwell were married. Nov. 13 - Toettel, the murderer of Joseph Brenner, was hung. Nov. 21 - J.H. Turrel, M., K. & T. conductor, died. Nov. 30 - Tom Tobin was instantly killed by being caught between a caboose and an engine. Dec. 5 - Mrs. Eliza Thoan died. Dec. 7 - Mr. Will R. Mills and Miss Lilly Anderson were joined in the bonds of matrimony. Dec. 12 - Mr. O.C. Hoffman and Miss Lizzie Sims were married. Dec. 13 - Frank Clynes killed on railroad. Dec. 17 - Accessor and collector J.P. Thompson died. Dec. 18 - The wedding of Dr. Nagle and Miss Lillian Andrews was solemnized. Dec. 20 - Fireman Mike Keely killed on railroad. Dec. 26 - Councilman Tone's family residence was destroyed by fire...Joseph Miller and Miss Lena McCormick were married. Dec. 29 - Alex W. Acheson, son of Dr. Acheson, died.
