In
the early 1870s in preparation for the arrival of the Missouri, Kansas
and Texas Railroad, William Benjamin Munson, Sr. and R.S. Stevens
purchased land in the area that would become the townsite of Denison in
1872. The town was laid out in the summer of 1872 and the first
lots were sold at a public sale on Monday, September 23, 1872.
Many of the families who had come to the area were still residing
in tents in the winter when as much as four inches of snow fell, and
there were no houses to rent because
families moved in as soon as the builders were through. However,
businesses were opening and the news of the town was first published by
B.C. Murray on December 27, 1872, elaborating on the facts that made
Denison and its surrounding area the place for people to come, to live,
and to prosper, listing the new businesses in town, giving current news
around the state, the United States and the world. The News
office was located on the south side of Skiddy Street, almost directly
south of The Nelson House.
Businesses listed in the 1st issue of the Denison News on December 27, 1872, just 3 months after the first town lots were sold.
