Friday, March 19, 1915 pg. 4 CANAAN - EVERHEART March 9, 1915 - The weather continues damp and cold. The roads are almost impassable. The daily theme of conversation is war, wet weather, hard times and good roads. The acreage sowed in wheat and oats is larger than ever before. The acreage in corn will be much larger, the acreage in cotton smaller. Riley Williams was in Whitewright Monday. The Sunday school meetings and prayer services have been abandoned for the past 4 months and the religious conditions are in a very serious dilemma on account of the inclement weather. Mr. Wade Sears has a fine bunch of Merino sheep and 26 little lambs on his magnificent estate in this community. The school is progressing nicely under the efficient management of Miss Fae Eatherly of Kentuckytown. She gives a literary program every Friday afternoon to which all are invited. Uncle Johnny Webster is staying close in home on account of the illness of his wife. Mr. W.L. White was in Sherman Monday to boost in the Good Roads movement. If he makes as good a g-r man as he is a gin man he's fine and dandy. Uncle Dave Alverson comes to the store every day with a basket of eggs. He says the way to save money is to stay away from town. Ewell Garner is mending fast after his recent mishap of a broken leg. pg.7 CANAAN - EVERHEART March 16th - Beautiful, radiant, glorious, sunny weather is a welcome visitor this week. Rev. W.A. Kirkpatrick filled his appointment to preach here Sunday and was greeted by a very attentive audience. Sunday School at 10 a.m. Rev. Buck will preach at 11 a.m. Prayer services at 7:30 p.m. L.P. and H.H. Sears, F.E. Alverson, W.L. White and others are to be commended on their recent work on the roads - filling mudholes and using the split-log drag. Tom Hicks left recently for Illinois, where he has employment on a farm. Little Vera May Mullins is visiting her grandmother, Mrs. Elliott Hicks. Kugga and Artis Blanton spent Saturday afternoon with Aunt May Alverson. Miss Mabel White spent Saturday afternoon with her cousins, Irene and Isabel Alverson. Miss Laura Garner spent Saturday and Sunday with relatives near Orangeville. A very delightful program was rendered by the pupils of Miss Eatherly on Friday afternoon to about 20 visitors. Joe Dan McMillin and family of Elm Grove, Ernest McClay and family, Allie and Cecil Alverson of Kentuckytown, Mrs. John Stephen and son of Enterprise and F.E. Alverson and family were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. C.D. Alverson. Edward Webster is very sick this week. Irene Alverson is suffering with tonsilitis. Canaan History Copyright © 2024, TXGenWeb.
