POSTMASTER
RETIRING
Mr.
Andrew Truett Davenport, Howe Postmaster,
has announced his retirement
effective August 31st. He has reached
the retirement age.
He has been postmaster for the last 23
years and has had 15 years
with the Post office Department. Mr.
Davenport was born and
reared in the Choctaw community 5 miles
south of Sherman. He was
educated in the Sherman public schools and
attended Captain Le
Tellier's Private School in Sherman.
His parents were J.T. and
Mary Catherine Hollingsworth Davenport.
Mr.
Davenport is a Baptist and a Mason with an
active membership in Howe
Lodge 430 AF and AM. He is a 32nd
degree Scottish Rite and is
affiliated with the Hella Temple Shrine in
Dallas, Texas.
Mr.
Davenport was in the filling station and
tourist court business from
1931 to 1952 before being appointed
postmaster in 1952. He was privileged
to secure for the Howe community the present
modern post
office building.
After
retirement he hopes to be able to fulfill
his dreams for fishing and traveling.
Postmaster
Davenport will be succeeded by Mr. James
Davis who will serve as acting postmaster.
Mr.
Davis is in the engineering department at
the Bonham Veteran's Center.
No decision has been reached as to
whether he will continue with
this work. He is a native of Van
Alstyne, having lived in Howe
since 1950.
In
1951 he began raising grain and cattle.
He is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Lee Davis of Elmont. Mrs. Davis
is the former Charlisie
Tolbert of Sherman, daughter of Mrs. Ethel
Tolbert, now of Howe.
They have 3 children, Ronnie, 7;
Sherrie, 2; and Michael, 7 weeks
old. He served overseas with the Navy
in World War II.
