Denison Daily News
Thursday, June 5, 1879 pg. 1 A SAD MISFORTUNE Last Friday there arrived in this city a Mr. McAdams, with his wife and 7 small children. Two years ago Mr. McAdams came from Illnois and settled in Ft. Worth. All went well for a time, but his family was taken sick, and after spending most of his money, the doctor advised him to go to Denison, where he thought the sick wife would recover. On arriving there his money was gone, he was sick, and his wife lay perfectly helpless. A Denison doctor advised him to come here and go to the poor farm. The family was brought over in an open wagon, the wife on a pallet, and the case presented to the county judge. The husband was very sick but could talk, while his wife lay almost unconscious, and unable to utter a word. The judge removed them to the engine house and ordered food. The oldest child is about 11 years old, and there are 2 twin babies 7 months old. Mrs. Wasson hearing of the condition of the family, went to see them, and sending for water, towels and soap, gave the little ones a bath. Several of our good women sent them food, and the next day they were carried out to the poor farm. Yesterday morning the poor woman died and was buried late in the evening. Thus is left a house full of dear little children without a mother's care. The father and mother were both very intelligent, and the 2 children show signs of having been well raised, and are bright, fine looking children. But misfortune overtook th em and they have come to this terrible plight. - - - Courier. The News called attention to this case on several occasions. A number of the Benevolent Association called on the family and promised assistance, which, for some reason or other, was never rendered.
