Niece of Davy Crockett and daughter of Patterson and Nancy
Crockett. Raised in Cedar County, Missouri. Married first, Robert D.
Gray on March 24, 1853 in Cedar County. Married second, John Matney.
Her birth name was Murcilla (sp?).
The following was taken from The Daily
Bulletin in Brownwood Texas on February 15, 1916:
“Davy Crockett’s Niece Leaves Grayson County’s Poor Farm; Has A Home
Sherman, Tex., Feb. 15. - Davy Crockett’s niece is no longer a charge
at the Grayson County poor farm. After spending several years as an
inmate of the county farm, operated by Joe Sammon, Mrs. Mary Matney has
been given a home by Dr. David B. Teems of this place.
According to Mrs. Matney, who is 84 years of age, she is the daughter
of Patterson Crockett, a brother of Davy Crockett of Alamo fame. She
was born in Gibson County, Tennessee and raised in Cedar County,
Missouri. She has been married twice, but has no children. Both
husbands are dead. She says she can distinctly remember her illustrious
uncle as a caller at her father’s house when she was about four years
old.
Mrs. Matney first came to the county farm seven years ago. Then she
went to make her home with some distant relatives. Two years ago she
came back and remained there until she was given a home by Dr. Teems.”
