Fort Johnston

Location: A Marker and site location is just west of the Fink intersection of Georgetown Rd and state highway 289 on Georgetown Rd.

The fort was established by two Republic of Texas 1st infantry companies commanded under Capt. John Holliday and under the direction of Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston, Republic of Texas Secretary of War.

The goal was to build a military road from the Red River to Austin. The starting point was Fort Johnston, following the route of present day State Highway 289, and ending at the Cedar Springs Post in present day Dallas.  The road then proceeded over a high ground to Austin, Texas.

The fort was abandoned in May 1841 when the Texas Army was disbanded.
