Texas Legislature set aside 50 leagues
of land in the 1850s to
establish a university system in the
state. A league is
approximately 4,428 acres of land.
The leagues were surveyed and
sold in fractional parts, typically 80
ac., 160 ac., or 320 ac.; the
proceeds of the land sales went toward
the development of the
University of Texas and Texas A&M
University. The leagues
were located in several of the
northeastern counties. "Univ LGE"
means "University League.
In the late 1800s the Texas Legislature granted 2 million more acres to the University system. These lands in west Texas were located in blocks of 640 acre sections and were never sold. Revenue has been generated from surface and mineral leases to benefit the Permanent University Fund (PUF).
