Legislature set aside 50 leagues of land
in the 1850s to establish a university

The leagues were surveyed and sold
in fractional parts, typically 80 ac.,

land sales went toward the development
of the University of Texas and Texas
A&M University. The leagues
were located in several of the
northeastern counties. "Univ LGE"
means "University League.
In the late 1800s the Texas Legislature granted 2 million more acres to the University system. These lands in west Texas were located in blocks of 640 acre sections and were never sold.
