Things of interest in Grayson County
1. 1700 - Tonkawa Indians inhabited Grayson County. 2. 1759 - The Indians defeated the Spaniards in a great battle on the Red River. 3. 1835 - Davy Crockett and Andrew Thomas exchanged guns under a large tree near Honey Grove, Thomas took Crockett's 27 pound long rifle in trade for a shorter gun and Crockett rode off to do battle at the Alamo. 4. 1838 - The first Steamboats came up the Red River. 5. 1846 - Grayson County was one of 22 counties carved off of Fannin County. 6. 1847 - First courthouse was built in Sherman at the cost of $232.00. 7. 1850 - The first window glass was put in the home of Dr. Bullock on Houston Street. 8. 1858 - Grayson County established eight post offices and one was in Collinsville. A log cabin near the big pecan tree on the square served as courthouse and Hall of Records. 9. 1863 - Jesse and Frank James reported in county. 10. 1864 - Widows of the war broke into Sherman commissary looking for food. 11. 1865 - Indians of Indian Territory continually raided the border settlements of Grayson County in North Texas. 12. 1866 - Sophia Porter transported cotton on a raft down the Red River to New Orleans and more than 200,000 head of cattle crossed the Red River at Preston Road. 13. 1875 - The Red River froze over. 14. 1876 - The first barbed wire fence was built. 15. 1881 - Tioga was established. 16. 1896 - Tioga was incorporated. 17. 1903 - Gunter Bible College opened. 18. 1906 - Interurban built into Grayson County. 19. 1930 - County courthouse burned in race riot. 20. 1941 - Perrin Field opened. 21. 1943 - Denison Dam completed.
