Dwight David Eisenhower Grayson County's Most Famous Son Denison,
Texas -- The City Council of the City of Denison, Texas, recently voted
to endorse Frank Gehry’s design for the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial
and encourage construction of the memorial honoring the legacy of
President Eisenhower, who was born in Denison in 1890. The resolution
adopted earlier this week is part of the City of Denison’s celebration
of President Eisenhower’s 125th birthday which will occur in October of
this year.
Describing the memorial as “a noble honor in recognition of a person who served his country unfailingly and in a manner that is well known and highly regarded throughout the world,” the resolution, passed by the City Council on February 16, 2015, states: “…the City Council of the City of Denison, Texas does hereby encourage and support the Eisenhower Memorial Commission, the United States Government and such other entities who may have oversight over the Eisenhower Memorial to take such actions as may be prudent and necessary to facilitate the construction of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial in Washington, D.C.” Following the vote, City of Denison Mayor, Jared Johnson, commented, “Denison
takes great pride in being the birthplace of one of the world's
greatest leaders. Due to the grassroots efforts from within our
community, in 1946 we were able to preserve the home he was born in. We
are honored to pay tribute to the man who will be remembered with this
memorial prominently placed in the nation's capitol.”
